UC Davis Opens Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Service

The UC Davis veterinary hospital announces the opening of the new small animal Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Service. This service replaces the Integrative Medicine Service, offering a full range of care options for dogs and cats suffering from mobility issues.

The new service is led by Dr. Denis Marcellin-Little, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine and rehabilitation specialist. Dr. Marcellin-Little is a Charter Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation and is one of the foremost authorities in animal physical therapy and rehabilitation with decades of experience.

The service will continue to provide a wide range of therapies including pain management, hydrotherapy, acupuncture, electrical and shockwave treatments, regenerative medicine, prosthetics, and much more.

In addition to Dr. Marcellin-Little, resident veterinarian Dr. Sayaka Shiomitsu is solely committed to the service while she completes her specialty training in sports medicine and rehabilitation.

Rounding out this team, we have a certified veterinary rehabilitation practitioner, a certified physical therapist, and a certified canine rehabilitation veterinary technician, as well as dedicated animal health technicians trained in rehabilitation.

The team works closely with other specialty services in the UC Davis veterinary hospital, as well as referring veterinarians, to identify all aspects of a patient’s case, including underlying causes to injuries and discovering multidisciplinary treatment options to accelerate recovery and optimize patient outcome.

In accordance with the growing orthopedic caseload and general demand for rehabilitative care, the hospital is currently working on the recruitment of an additional faculty member for the service, increasing opportunities for patients to receive the high quality, compassionate care clients have come to expect from UC Davis.
